4 Commonly Overlooked Winter Allergy Symptoms

admin 15 November, 2023

Woman,Blowing,In,A,Wipe,Suffering,Flu,Symptoms,Sitting,OnWinter may not be known as the season for allergies, but it has become widely seen as the flu season. Because colds, influenza, and other viral infections are so common this time of year, many people overlook subtle signs that could indicate they have winter allergies.

These are four of the most commonly overlooked winter allergy symptoms to keep an eye out for; if you notice they persist, then it could be a good idea to consult with us at Del Rey MD.

1. Persistent Dry Cough

Some people think they just have a “winter bug,” but in reality, a persistent dry cough could mean you have allergies. Coughing is a result of inflamed or irritated airways, which could be triggered by allergens such as dust, pet dander, or mold.

Winter itself does not tend to bring a lot of new environmental allergens, so if you notice the dry cough starts this time of year, it’s important to investigate lifestyle changes that could be exposing you to triggers.

2. Eczema Flare-Ups

The patches of dry itchy skin that many people develop during winter can actually be brought on by allergies. If you notice that your eczema tends to get worse during this time of year, it can be a good idea to consult with an immunologist who can get to the bottom of your flare-ups.

3. Itchy Eyes

Is it dry air or something more? Winter allergies can lead to itchy, even runny eyes that are a persistent bother in your life. Mold is typically the most common cause of this symptom, especially if you find that it only happens indoors in a specific location.

Make sure your home is properly ventilated, and avoid excessive moisture build-up with a dehumidifier.

4. Runny Nose

A runny nose (rhinitis) is not just a matter of the seasons changing and colds becoming more prevalent. While it certainly can be a relatively harmless symptom of a minor viral infection, it should not be ignored. Developing a runny nose, especially one that persists, may mean your body is reacting to winter allergies.
