Does California’s Winter Air Trigger Sinus Symptoms? Tips for Relief

Winter has subtly moved in. We can feel it in the air – the chilly breeze is becoming cooler and drier too.

Winter sniffles are very common among people with sensitive sinuses. It’s certainly not something new – but that doesn’t mean we have to just sit back and take it. Certainly, there are certain steps one could take to find sinus relief, amidst the colder and sometimes harsh winter air.

Does the California Winter Trigger Sinus Issues?

While California generally has milder winters compared to other states, the air could still get colder and drier than at other times of the year. The colder air causes the sinuses to contract more than usual. This results in blocked sinuses and mucus buildup, the perfect breeding ground for infections from germs, viruses, and bacteria.

Additionally, winter air gets drier – regardless of whether the state sees snow in winter or not. Dry air can cause dryness in the sinus passages, causing sinus and nasal irritation. When sinuses are irritated, inflammation occurs and they are more likely to develop into infections.

Lastly, sudden shifts in the weather and changes in barometric pressure can put pressure on the sinuses. This can result in headaches, sinus pain, and a general feeling of discomfort in the nasal cavities.

So, yes – California’s winter season, no matter how mild compared to other states’ winter seasons, can trigger sinus issues.

Winter Sinus Issues: Tips for Relief

1.   Keep yourself hydrated

You can counter the winter season’s dry and harsh air by ensuring that you’re keeping yourself hydrated. This keeps mucus thin so it spreads over the sinus passages, performing its job efficiently. This also promotes proper mucus drainage so you can breathe better. Aim for at least eight glasses of water a day and avoid dehydrating beverages like caffeine and alcohol.

2.   Use an indoor humidifier

Winter air is dry and can therefore cause dryness and irritation in the sinuses. Run an indoor humidifier to introduce moisture back into the air in your home.

3.   Nasal irrigation with nasal sprays

Nasal irrigation via saline nasal sprays breaks down mucus buildup and clears the sinuses. This helps you breathe better. Saline sprays can also effectively moisturize the sinuses, preventing dryness and irritation.

4.   Steam inhalation is tried and tested

Steam inhalation clears blockages and moisturizes dry sinuses. Do this by pouring hot water into a large bowl. Then, place your head directly above the bowl and cover your head with a towel. Breathe deeply through your nose and let the steam in and out.

5.   Maintain your home’s HVAC system

Regularly maintain and clean your home’s HVAC system. This ensures that it’s in top shape to provide air circulation and ventilation in your home come wintertime. Clean it regularly, change filters when necessary, and have a professional regularly check it for maintenance.

6.   Practice healthy habits

A weak immune system can easily contract infections from germs, viruses, and bacteria. Keep your defenses up by practicing healthy habits.

Maintain a healthy diet of vitamin and nutrient-rich foods and drink plenty of water. Always wash your hands to stop the spread of germs. Exercise regularly and get adequate rest and sleep. Consider adding vitamin supplements to your diet to further strengthen your immunity.
