Persistent Sinus Problems? When to See an ENT in Southern California

admin 21 January, 2025

Are your sinus issues lingering longer and hitting harder than ever before?

A stuffy nose, trouble breathing, throat irritation, headaches, and fatigue can all be signs of a sinus problem. Dealing with these symptoms day after day can wear you down, impacting your well-being and quality of life.

If this sounds all too familiar and you’ve been suffering without relief, it might be time to visit an ENT specialist who can help get to the root of the problem.

When to See an ENT in Southern California

What Is an ENT Specialist?

Also known as an otolaryngologist, an ENT specialist is a healthcare provider that specializes in diagnosing and treating ear, nose, and throat conditions. The word otolaryngologist is difficult to pronounce and write for many people so an ENT specialist is the more common term.

ENT specialists are trained to perform surgical and nonsurgical treatments to provide relief to an array of patients.

When You Should See an ENT specialist

There are many reasons and benefits for patients seeing an ENT specialist. While your primary care provider (PCP) can diagnose and treat mild ear, nose, and throat concerns, they may refer you to a specialist if your condition requires.

Here are common reasons why you should book an appointment with an ENT specialist:

1.   Chronic sinusitis

Sinusitis is a common respiratory condition where the sinus cavities become inflamed and swollen. The condition causes blocked nasal passages, making it difficult to breathe. If the condition lasts for more than 12 weeks, it is identified as chronic sinusitis. An ENT specialist can examine your condition and provide you with effective treatment options.

2.   Sore throat or tonsillitis

Sore throats are very common but not all cases will require seeing an ENT specialist. If your sore throat causes difficulty in swallowing or you experience persistent pain in your throat, there might be an underlying cause like tonsillitis.

Tonsillitis is the inflammation of the tonsils which causes sore throat, tender lymph nodes, and difficulty swallowing.

3.   Allergies

Common allergy symptoms include nasal congestion, headaches, itchy and watery eyes, and frequent sneezing. A visit to an ENT specialist will help you find the root cause of your allergies and help you manage your symptoms.

4.   Persistent nasal congestion

Blocked nasal passages make it very difficult to breathe. Persistent nasal congestion is not normal and shouldn’t be ignored. It could be a sign of an underlying cause like sinusitis – in which case you should consult with an ENT specialist for a proper diagnosis and treatment options that can help you breathe better.

5.   Dizziness or vertigo

Dizziness or vertigo is common for many people and is often a short-term concern from changes in the position of their head like standing up too quickly, bending over, or looking up. In some cases, someone might feel the dizziness even when standing still. Vertigo often results from an issue in the inner ear like an infection or a buildup of fluid or wax.

6.   Recurring ear infections

Recurring and constant ear infections and ear pain can indicate a more serious health concern. Sometimes, this can be a sign of tumor growth in the throat. This sounds scary – and it is – which is why consulting with an ENT specialist is important.

7.   Hearing loss

Hearing loss that comes on suddenly – and is not due to aging – is often due to a more serious illness. An ENT specialist can help detect hearing loss and what could cause it. Such causes can include ear infections, inner ear issues, and other neurological issues.

8.   Ringing in the ears

Tinnitus is a condition characterized by a constant ringing sensation in the ears. It can be an early sign of hearing loss, ear infection, or another hearing problem.

9.   Lump in the neck

A lump in the neck that lasts for more than two weeks requires the expertise of an ENT specialist. This can be a sign of mouth, throat, thyroid, or other types of blood cancers.

10.                 Sleep apnea

Sleep apnea is a serious sleep condition characterized by a cycle of breathing pauses while sleeping. Breathing pauses during sleep can result in loud snores. When you stop breathing, the brain signals to wake you up, causing sleep disturbances in many sufferers.
