Winterizing Your Sinus Health: Simple Habits for Relief

admin 10 December, 2024

Winter has arrived, and even in Southern California’s typically mild climate, cooler breezes can bring challenges for those with sensitive sinuses. For many, the season doesn’t mean a break from sinus issues—thanks to year-round vegetation and pollen production in the region.

Whether or not snow or frost is part of your winter landscape, the season can still take a toll on sinus health, increasing the risk of sinus infections and other sinus-related issues.

Del Rey Winterizing Your Sinus Health Simple Habits for Relief

Apply These Simple Habits to Breathe Better This Winter Season

1.   Keep yourself hydrated

Hydration is key to keeping you and your sinuses healthy through the breezy winter air. Winter air is often dry and this can be drying and irritating to your sinuses as well. When sinuses are irritated, they’re more susceptible to inflammation and infection caused by germs, viruses, and bacteria.

Counter this by drinking plenty of water. This combats dry sinuses and thins mucus which is crucial for proper mucus drainage, helping you breathe better.

2.   Use a humidifier and air purifier in your home

When the air feels too dry, run a humidifier inside your home to introduce much-needed moisture to indoor air. An air purifier is also a worthy addition to your home as this gets rid of dust, dirt, and other small particles that can trigger various sinus issues.

3.   Nasal irrigation with nasal sprays

You can find relief from blocked sinuses and nasal congestion through nasal irrigation with nasal saline sprays. This breaks down mucus buildup and clears the sinuses, helping you breathe better. It’s also an effective technique to moisturize dry sinuses.

4.   Steam inhalation can work wonders for your sinuses

Steam inhalation is a tried and tested method to find sinus relief. It promotes proper mucus drainage, provides relief from congestion, and moisturizes the nasal passages.

You can do this by pouring hot water into a large bowl and then proceeding to place your head directly over the bow. Cover your head with a towel to trap the steam. Then, breathe through your nose. The steam can help clear blockages and moisturize the sinuses, providing relief.

5.   Keep your home clean

People tend to spend more time indoors when it’s beginning to get cold outside. Keep your home clean by regularly vacuuming and dusting. Regularly clean any humidifiers and air purifiers you have running in your home too. Additionally, change your bedding regularly to avoid contact with common indoor allergens.

6.   Know your triggers and avoid them

Allergies can trigger or worsen sinus infections and issues so it is in your best interest to know your specific triggers. This allows you to take active precautions to avoid them at all costs and take any medications to minimize the symptoms.

7.   Invest in high-quality HEPA filters

HEPA filters can remove at least 99.97% of dust, dirt, pollen, allergens, and other airborne contaminants from indoor air. Invest in high-quality filters for your home’s HVAC system. Regularly clean, maintain, and replace them to ensure good quality indoor air.
